Responsibilities

  • The OB Technologist participates in providing care to patients undergoing surgical intervention in collaboration with other members of the surgical team and under the direction of a registered nurse
  • Participates in services to support patient care and unit function: assists with room set up and turnover, restocking and supply maintenance in patient care areas, including operating rooms in the Birth Center
  • Other tasks as delegated by the RN
  • Stocks supplies in the OR and Labor and Delivery suites, including triage
  • Assists with set up and take down of OB procedures and surgical rooms as needed
  • Maintains equipment in OR, delivery suites, and triage
  • Assures safe, clean OR/procedure environment and participates in room preparation (including triage and labor rooms) and turn-over as needed
  • Transports and picks up of instruments to and from sterile processing
  • Maintains established par levels of sterile instruments, packs and supplies in OR and L and D suites
  • Monitors expiration dates on equipment and supplies on unit
  • Keeps current in hospital regulations and policies
  • Contributes to effective teamwork and coworker relationships
  • Scrubs for all C/S in Labor and Delivery
  • Plans and organizes for surgical procedure needs
  • Preference cards are used and updated to prepare for current and future cases
  • Age appropriate needs are assessed and appropriate interventions identified
  • Preparations for procedure are made in a timely and effective manner
  • All appropriate supplies for procedures are obtained and restocked
  • Follows proper policies and procedures relating to operative/procedural care of patients
  • Follows aseptic technique standards of practice, policies and procedures
  • Maintains and assures correct counts, and pause for cause with every new procedure
  • Maintains an orderly room environment in accordance with department standards
  • Handles specimens per policy/procedure, assures proper labeling by RN of specimens
  • Implements all safety measures for all patients, self and co-workers
  • Maintains competency of required skills and knowledge
  • Performs specialty assignments in accordance with unit objectives

Education

  • High school graduate
  • Completion of Accredited Surgical Technologist Program
  • Completion of an LPN program in addition to completion of the Surgical Technology Program for LPNs in Labor and Delivery if hired prior to 2005

Qualification/Skills

Experience

  • New hires are expected to have completed the required clinical experience in an accredited Surgical Technologist Program

Skills

  • Possess knowledge of the theory and application of sterile and aseptic techniques, human anatomy and physiology, use of tools and technologies for OB surgical procedures
  • Strong clinical knowledge base of operating room
  • The ability to establish effective relationships and demonstrate positive teamwork with health care team members, physicians, managers and leaders
  • Demonstrated strong organization skills and time management in OR and on unit

Licensure/Certifications

  • Current BLS certification
  • CST certification within 6 months of hire

Work Schedule

  • 20 hours a week
  • Evening and Night rotating shifts (8 hour shifts)
  • Every 3rd weekend rotation (12 hour Night WE shifts)
  • SEIU
  • Benefit eligible

The city of Coon Rapids is a fast growing community on the Mississippi River just 20 minutes north of Minneapolis-St. Paul, and the metropolitan area gateway to the northern part of the state. Coon Rapids offers excellent access to highways, dynamic community shopping centers with major retail anchors, and a wide variety of recreational activities including neighborhood and regional parks, a municipal golf course, indoor ice arenas, hiking and biking trails and swimming pools.
