The Commons, located in Minneapolis, is the headquarters of Allina Health, a not-for-profit health care organization serving patients and communities. Approximately 1,600 corporate and administrative service employees work at offices within Midtown Exchange, the site of the historic Sears retail complex at Chicago Avenue and E. Lake Street. This community landmark, adjacent to the campus of Abbott Northwestern Hospital, part of Allina Health, is the second largest building in Minnesota and includes offices, an internationally themed public market and residential units.

 

Responsibilities

Greet patient in a respectful, warm, and professional manner by phone and in-person. Follow appropriate processes to collect demographic and insurance information in system while maintaining accuracy. Document issues and resolutions in Excellian Account Notes as necessary.

  • Use resources, tools and procedures to complete registrations for complex account(s)
  • Identify Prior Authorizations for services. Complete required documentation in Excellian. Complete additional follow up per department procedures. Obtain cost information and explain waiver process to patient as necessary.
  • Identify, verify and complete eligibility and benefits via electronic resources/phone, interpret results and enter into Excellian.
  • Use resources, tools and procedures to complete accounts in assigned work queues.
  • Explain copays, coinsurance, and/or deductible to patient(s) and collect on financial obligation owed. . Complete high-level screening for appropriateness of financial programs and/or referral to Med Eligible Services. Offer resources to patient and explain the program options available. Refer patient to PAS-Senior as necessary.

For example but not limited to:

  • Mentor staff.
  • Maintain neat and orderly work and patient areas.
  • Assist with patient navigation throughout the facility.
  • Provide patient assistance.
  • De-escalate basic situations including patient complaints.
  • Use a work station on wheels and push a patient in a wheelchair.
  • Special projects as directed by department leaders.

Education

  • High school or GED required

Qualification/Skills

Two years of customer service experience required. One year experience in revenue cycle or insurance required; in a health care setting preferred. Proficient with computers and programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Proven strong customer service skills with an exceptional ability to listen and communicate to others. Working knowledge of medical terminology and/or health care insurance as demonstrated by prior experience/education. Experience in a team orientated environment essential.

  • Multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Handle and manage financial payments.
  • Develop rapport with a wide variety of customers in a short timeframe.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of English language in both verbal and written context.
  • Self-motivate and multi-task in an effective manner that includes organizing and prioritizing the work in a timely manner.
  • Remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills while working through complex situations.
  • Work independently with little supervision.
