The Commons, located in Minneapolis, is the headquarters of Allina Health, a not-for-profit health care organization serving patients and communities. Approximately 1,600 corporate and administrative service employees work at offices within Midtown Exchange, the site of the historic Sears retail complex at Chicago Avenue and E. Lake Street. This community landmark, adjacent to the campus of Abbott Northwestern Hospital, part of Allina Health, is the second largest building in Minnesota and includes offices, an internationally themed public market and residential units.

Position Purpose
  • Design benefits that provide competitive benefits programs to support the organization’s workforce strategies and enhance employee engagement. In addition, ensures that plan design, administration and funding methods are based on cost containment strategies that control on-going benefit program costs.
  • Drive innovative strategies to improve value of the benefits provided to employees and connected to organizational strategy to provide high-value integrated complex care.
  • Responsible for the on-going program administration including annual reviews, implementation of new and/or plan changes, the annual open enrollment process, budget development and on-going monitoring of costs. Programs include all traditional health and welfare programs (union and non-union), executive and physician benefits, pension and retirement savings plans, non-qualified plans and the well-being program.
  • Develop and implement all associated communication strategies, materials and distribution of information to ensure employees understand both the plans benefits and their value as part of the total compensation package.
  • Manage relationship with outside benefit consultants on the design, costing and communication of benefit programs including annual actuarial services to support plan costing.
  • Manage internal vendor relationships, including collaborating with vendors to deliver innovative strategies while holding vendors accountable to best in class vendor expectations.
  • Ensure the inclusion and input from other Human Resource functions to identify common objectives, resources and activities. This includes corporate and business unit HR staffs, Talent Acquisition, Talent and Organizational Design, Labor Relations, Shared Services, Compensation and others as needed.
  • Provide management and leadership to the Benefits Department that includes one managers and staff. Position directly manages three retirement specialists. Set performance expectations and goals, actively develop staff, provide coaching and feedback and all other management responsibilities for the team.
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance for all benefit plans and design work processes and direct work performance to be compliant with all rules and regulations, accreditation standards and applicable laws.
  • Serve and business process owner for employee benefits as part of organizational transformation and implementation of cloud based HR platform (Workday Implementation).


  • BA/BS required; Masters strongly preferred.
  • Certification in benefits by CEBS or World at Work strongly preferred.


  • Minimum ten years of experience in progressively increasing employee benefits positions including a minimum of 5 years in a leadership position.
  • Prior experience in working a union environment including bargaining experience in the design of benefit plans preferred.
  • Certification in benefits by CEBS or World at Work strongly preferred.
  • Ability to anticipate, think strategically, and challenge appropriately. Experience implementing major plan changes including use of change management approaches and techniques.
  • Must have sound business acumen and demonstrated abilities to develop partnerships and influence all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrate the ability to combine creative and analytical thinking to support business objectives.
  • Demonstrate the ability to direct and successfully manage multiple, diverse projects on time and within budget.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain a highly effective benefits staff through strong leadership and management skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent operations, project management, and leadership capabilities.
