The Commons, located in Minneapolis, is the headquarters of Allina Health, a not-for-profit health care organization serving patients and communities. Approximately 1,600 corporate and administrative service employees work at offices within Midtown Exchange, the site of the historic Sears retail complex at Chicago Avenue and E. Lake Street. This community landmark, adjacent to the campus of Abbott Northwestern Hospital, part of Allina Health, is the second largest building in Minnesota and includes offices, an internationally themed public market and residential units.

Position Purpose
This position serves as a key leadership role responsible for the strategy, development and leadership of Allina Health’s internal communications strategy and programs. Responsible for employee communications that support strategic business priorities and fostering a positive employee experience through the delivery of consistent messages to internal business units and various employee audiences. Provides strategic counsel and ensures internal stakeholders/leaders are aligned on key messaging strategies and campaigns.

Strategy / Planning / Execution

  • Serve as a strategic leader in the development, implementation and execution of the system-wide internal communications strategy, mission and roadmap
  • Analyzes and improves existing or develops new internal communication channels/program/tactics in support of company strategy and evolving priorities
  • Implements the most effective and impactful methods/channels of communication to achieve department, business unit or organizational objectives
  • Proactively identifies needs and translates business objectives into effective communications plans Innovate how we share information with employees and providers to increase readership and understanding/awareness of key messages
  • Manage or direct the implementation for sensitive and complex issues, including major negotiations efforts, organizational changes and reputational/risk issues
  • Participate in or oversee planning and strategies for building a culture of Whole Person Care through internal brand or organizational people/culture strategy efforts
  • Build up storytelling in communications channels.
  • Consulting; Building/Maintaining Relationships
  • Partner with and influence executive leaders on communication strategies/plans for high-impact initiatives, announcements and presentations
  • Build new approaches that leverage SLT as leaders of business units - and grow leaders' comfort with and ability to cascade information.
  • Present plans and counsel to executive stakeholders
  • Write messaging and advise on distribution practices for critical messages
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders, including public policy, external communications/public relations, marketing, compliance, community benefit and engagement, etc., on reputational messaging opportunities

Leading

  • Independently leads a team of internal communications professionals
  • Engages in goal-setting to ensure department goals/priorities are in alignment and support with the broader organization
  • Direct the efforts and priorities of the communications team, including corporate staff, contractors and vendors, to ensure alignment with measurable, organizational strategies and priorities
  • Work with internal communications managers and senior leadership to ensure the appropriate level of support is dedicated to communications for internal and external communications needs
  • Provide direction and feedback to the team on deliverables and how to optimize campaigns across the organization


Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications or equivalent.

Qualification/Skills

  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in employee/internal communication/change management communications
  • Minimum of 8-12 years of experience managing/leading a communications team and associated strategy/program assignments
  • Ability to set communications strategy by building consensus and cross-functional collaboration
  • Possess a creative vision for building culture and bringing strategies to life in ways that are meaningful to and trusted by all stakeholders
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills and business acumen
  • Demonstrated agility to lead change and develop strategies that help achieve change
  • Proven ability to work with and influence executive leaders and manage challenging and sensitive topics or situations. Experience in developing board level materials and presentations.
  • Capable of building and directing communications plans that meet business objectives, are measurable and balanced appropriately within other organizational and communications priorities
  • Demonstrated aptitude for driving individual and team performance by coaching, modeling behaviors and providing constructive feedback
  • Able to constructively collaborate and build positive, productive relationships with leaders and staff that build trust and credibility
  • Experience managing budgets, external vendor relationships and able to negotiate and maintain contracts
  • Proven track record managing multiple projects and tight deadlines; highly motivated and creative self-starter
  • Ability to listen, earn trust, and give/accept direct feedback while building strong, positive relationships

Work Schedule

Generally days, but evenings and weekends as necessary for this leadership role.

Minneapolis boasts being both cosmopolitan yet small enough that you can find a place to call home whether on a lake, golf course, or in an adjoining suburb. With the fast pace of activity there are professional sports, theater, or enough parks for a quiet walk. The area has numerous schools and colleges, both public or private, and enough teams for all weekend athletes to join.
