The Commons, located in Minneapolis, is the headquarters of Allina Health, a not-for-profit health care organization serving patients and communities. Approximately 1,600 corporate and administrative service employees work at offices within Midtown Exchange, the site of the historic Sears retail complex at Chicago Avenue and E. Lake Street. This community landmark, adjacent to the campus of Abbott Northwestern Hospital, part of Allina Health, is the second largest building in Minnesota and includes offices, an internationally themed public market and residential units.

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate, objective, and first-person interpretation services between healthcare professionals, patients, and their families.
  • Introduces self and explain role briefly and succinctly to patient and provider.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, healthcare professionals, and family members.
  • Assist in the clarification of concepts when necessary.
  • Address the “comfort needs” of patient in relation to the interpreter with regard to factors such as age, gender, hierarchy, status, level of acculturation and other potential areas of discomfort.
  • Can clearly separate own personal values and beliefs from those of the patient and companion.
  • Facilitates appointments and referrals through telephone and in person contacts with patients and their family members
  • Assist in educating hospital staff about the cultural implications of heath care delivery.

Education

High School Diploma (or equivalent), undergraduate college degree preferred

Qualification/Skills

  • At least one year interpreting experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.
    A valid Certificate of Interpretation (CI) and Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID);
    • or Comprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC) from RID or A valid Level 4 or 5 Certificate from the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) or NIC, NIC Advanced, NIC Master.
  • An understanding of medical protocol and terminology, including knowledge of commonly used terms and concepts related to the human body; symptoms, illnesses, and medications; and health care specialties and treatments in each language, including the ability to interpret or explicate technical expressions.
  • Recognition of ethical issues, knowledge of ethical standards, and ethical decision-making, assessed by obtaining the candidate’s response to scenarios calling for ethical choices.
  • Ability to anticipate and recognize misunderstandings that arise from the differing cultural assumptions and expectations of providers and patients and to respond to such issues appropriately.
  • Ability to interpret brief written texts such as application forms, signage, or medicinal labels.
  • Ability to establish good rapport with patients, family members and medical staff.
  • Ability to travel to Allina facilities.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.

Work Schedule

Ability to work in the southern Metro region (Northfield, Owatonna, Faribault)
Ability to work on a rotational emergency on-call schedule 4pm-7am
