  • The Physician Assistant works as a part of a surgeon/physician assistant team, providing care for the cardiothoracic surgical patient throughout the surgical care continuum (pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative follow-up)
  • Provide clinical care for patients including assessment, diagnosis/treatment of illness, ordering and interpreting medical diagnostics, chronic illness management, wellness care, prescribing of medications, treatments, therapy, medical equipment, etc.
  • Provide referrals for specialty care and patient education
  • Perform office procedures and consults within specialty
  • Provides first and second assistance for all cardiovascular, thoracic, and vascular procedures
  • The Physician Assistant works in collaboration with other MHI and Hospital team members
  • Setting up cardiopulmonary bypass lines and other necessary equipment pertinent to the operation
  • Performing vein harvesting, radial artery harvesting, chest wall & incision closure.
  • Inserting Amplatz and intra-aortic balloon catheters.
  • To be dedicated, orderly, conscientious and emotionally stable to handle the Operating Room environment
  • To exercise diplomacy and establish solid communication networks with all hospital staff
  • To initiate effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, co-workers and the general public
  • Manual dexterity is essential
  • Help position patient, utilizing knowledge of anatomy, patient safety and surgical incision site
  • Assist in draping the patient with sterile drapes once the surgical prep is completed
  • Assist surgeon during procedure demonstrating a clear understanding of surgical anatomy, retracting, cauterizing, sponging, knot tying and suturing
  • Collectively create and maintain a staffing pattern & call schedule
  • Consults with collaborating physician when needed
  • Maintains knowledge of clinical areas of practice
  • Functions effectively in a team environment
  • Provide accurate documentation in the patients’ records according to standards of documentation
  • Utilize appropriate coding and charging criteria for patient billing and submits them in a timely manner


  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program, Masters Degree preferred



  • 3 – 5 years of Cardiothoracic Surgical PA experience, or equivalent experience as PA in Cardiovascular – Thoracic setting


  • Sound knowledge of adult cardiovascular health, cardiovascular and thoracic anatomy, cardiovascular and thoracic surgical techniques, and related diagnostic and clinical therapies
  • Ability to work as part of a surgeon/physician assistant dyad in surgery, hospital unit, and clinic settings
  • Excellent teamworking abilities
  • Professional image via appearance and conduct
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff, physicians, and the public; advanced physical and psychosocial health assessment skills
  • Ability to teach patients, families, staff, and students; knowledge of research methodologies


  • Formal education as a physician assistant in an area consistent with the patient population served
  • Current Physician Assistant Registration in the State of Minnesota
  • Certification as a physician assistant by NCCPA
  • Minnesota prescriptive authority and DEA licensure
  • Must have a physician assistant supervisory agreement with MHI Cardiothoracic Surgeon specifying delegated prescriptive privileges
  • ACLS certification preferred

Work Schedule

  • Day coverage for CVOR, unit, floor & emergencies.
  • Participate in night & weekend call rotation with colleagues.
