The Commons, located in Minneapolis, is the headquarters of Allina Health, a not-for-profit health care organization serving patients and communities. Approximately 1,600 corporate and administrative service employees work at offices within Midtown Exchange, the site of the historic Sears retail complex at Chicago Avenue and E. Lake Street. This community landmark, adjacent to the campus of Abbott Northwestern Hospital, part of Allina Health, is the second largest building in Minnesota and includes offices, an internationally themed public market and residential units.

 

Responsibilities

The Somali Interpreter provides interpreter services in a variety of settings to facilitate communication betweenLimited English Proficient (LEP) patients and companions and Allina Health providers and other staff. Follows NCIHC Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice and Allina Health policies, department guidelines and procedures. Maintains productivity records on services provided. Performs accurate and complete translation of written documents as deemed appropriate by Language Services department standards.

Education

High School Diploma (or equivalent), undergraduate college degree preferred

Qualification/Skills

  • Registered on the Minnesota Department of Health's Spoken Language Interpreter Roster.
  • Successful completion of a medical interpreter training such as Bridging the Gap, The Community Interpreting, and/or interpreting credits from an accredited institution like Interpreting and Translation Program of the University of Minnesota or Century College
  • National Certification (CMI, CHI, or CoreCHI) is preferred
  • At least one year interpreting experience, preferably in a healthcare setting
  • Must successfully demonstrate oral proficiency and medical interpretation skills based on an accredited test demonstrating fluency in both English and the target language.
  • A basic understanding of medical protocol and terminology, including knowledge of commonly used terms and concepts related to the human body; symptoms, illnesses, and medications; and health care specialties and treatments in each language, including the ability to interpret or explicate technical expressions.
  • Recognition of ethical issues, knowledge of ethical standards, and ethical decision-making, assessed by obtaining the candidate’s response to scenarios calling for ethical choices.
  • Ability to anticipate and recognize misunderstandings that arise from the differing cultural assumptions and expectations of providers and patients and to respond to such issues appropriately.
  • Ability to produce oral translations, or, where appropriate, brief written translations of written texts such as application forms, signage, or medicinal labels.
  • Ability to establish good rapport with patients, family members and medical staff.
  • Ability to travel to all Allina facilities.
  • Computer skills, including word processing (preferably Microsoft Word).
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.

Work Schedule

Ability to travel to all Allina Health locations.
Ability to work day/night/weekend shifts.
Has a valid driver's license.
Has national certification (CMI, CHI, CoreCHI), if not must obtain within 6 months of hire.
Night shift 11:30p - 7:30am
