Abbott Northwestern - Sterile Processing Department is adding multiple supervisor positions to the leadership team to provide support to our SPD staff on a 24/7 basis.

Supervises daily operations in Sterile Processing Department through assessment, delegation, coordination of operational activities, collaboration and communication in order to provide sterile instrumentation/products to the operating room and other customers.

Coordinates the daily operations of Sterile Processing
  • Assigns work to effectively meet customer needs.
  • Monitor and evaluate work
  • Respond in a professional manner to questions/requests from customers and employees.
  • Demonstrates competence in sterilization, handling of sterile supplies and all facets of sterile processing
  • Makes certain that employees have a clear understanding of their responsibilities.
  • Closely monitors absenteeism and tardiness.
  • Effectively manages performance and behavior challenges.
  • Works in collaboration with Quality Specialist team to ensure that employees demonstrate competence in all job tasks they are expected to perform.
  • Constantly evaluates the work climate and takes action to resolve conflict within the work environment.
  • Completes employee evaluations within hospital policy time frame.
  • Communication liaison between staff, operating room, and manager
  • Promotes positive labor relations within the department
  • Assists in new employee orientation and assessment
  • Develops positive relationships with peer group, customers and employees.
  • Holds regular meetings with staff to share and receive information.
  • Communicates high expectations to work group.
  • Effectively communicates at all levels
  • Works in collaboration with Quality Specialist team to implement and monitor Quality Assurance initiatives including meeting accreditation standards.
  • Communication liaison, along with Operating room staff, physicians and outside vendor reps for daily operations.
  • Participates on departmental and hospital committees as required
  • Identifies errors and judges situations that require referral to manager
  • Participates in departmental problem solving and strategic planning
  • Participates in implementation of new equipment and/or technology for the OR and SPD including Loaner Equipment.
  • Promotes a learning environment providing motivation, participation and opportunities for employees


  • Successful completion of Sterile Processing Course and CRCST certified.
  • Completion of program for Surgical Technologist, Practical Nurse, or degree in allied health preferred.


  • Five years minimum experience in Sterile Processing
  • 1-2 years of Supervisory experience
  • Certification in Sterile Processing or within six months of hire
  • Advance knowledge of relevant regulations and legislation
  • Advance knowledge of surgical equipment and their uses.
  • Excellent human resources management and leadership skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with staff, physicians and patients/families
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects at a time
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve goals and objectives within specified time frames
  • Excellent conflict resolution and change management skills
  • Computer skills and knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet programs
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education
  • Membership and participation in a relevant professional organization

Work Schedule

  • 40 hours a week
  • Typically evening shifts; attending occasional department meetings during day shift and providing coverage to day and/or night shift peers as needed
  • Up to every 4th weekend (weekend hours are a mid-day/evening shift)
  • Non-contract
  • Benefit eligible

*** Training is typically 60-90 days; with the first 30 days scheduled on day shift (7am-3pm).
