Responsibilities

  • The technician functions under the supervision of the pharmacist and provides basic drug distribution and drug preparation services in the pharmacy and on the patient care units
  • The position is trained in high risk medication preparation (e.g., TPN, Chemotherapy)
  • Prepare, check and dispense medications and supplies, compound extemporaneous products including packaging of medications in unit dose or unit of use packaging
  • Follows USP 797 requirements in preparing IV admixtures, IVIG, antibiotic piggybacks, syringes and other aseptically prepared products
  • Deliver medications and supplies to patient care areas
  • Perform monthly station checks, medication room outdate checks and organization
  • Check and restock nursing unit crash carts
  • Answer and/or appropriately triage incoming phone calls to various areas of the pharmacy department or pharmacists using proper phone etiquette
  • Assist in inventory control functions
  • Order, receive, unpack, check incoming stock against invoice and put away in a timely manner in relief of the buyer

Education

  • High school degree minimum

Qualification/Skills

Experience

  • Voc Tech Pharmacy Technician training program or two years of hospital pharmacy experience preferred

Skills

  • Good ability to perform routine mathematical and pharmaceutical calculations
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Computer experience preferred
  • Typing skill of 30 wpm preferred

Licensure/Certifications

  • Technician certification required
  • Registered with Minnesota Board of Pharmacy
