Abbott Northwestern - WestHealth, located in Plymouth, Minn., provides outpatient health care services, including emergency and urgent care, same-day surgery, imaging, breast center, laboratory, pharmacy, and more than 50 family and specialty physician clinics on one campus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the RN in the evaluation and care of a diverse patient population in the ED and UC
  • Assist with arrival of ambulance patients
  • Identify potentially life-threatening symptoms
  • Identify musculoskeletal emergencies
  • Demonstrate knowledge of splint application and documentation
  • Properly fits patients and assists in training on use of orthopedic hard goods
  • Assist MD/NP/RN with procedures: wound prep/closure/dressings, splinting, epistaxis, other procedures as needed
  • Document all patient care delivered, interventions and outcomes on documentation tool
  • Assist ED phlebotomist with POC testing
  • Obtain and transmit an artifact-free 12 lead EKG tracing on the patient care unit
  • Utilizes appropriate telephone techniques
  • Performs chart maintenance per procedure when working as HUC
  • Assist with transport of patients to ancillary services/ in patient rooms
  • Ensure proper inventory of unit supplies and equipment
  • Supports patient care by prioritizing unit’s needs
  • Continuously seeks to increase the quality and value of service provided to our customers

Education

  • High school graduate
  • Successful completion of an accredited Emergency Medical Technician course
  • Basic arrhythmia/EKG interpretation education highly recommended

Qualification/Skills

Experience

  • One year or acute care or pre-hospital experience preferred.

Skills

  • Demonstrated high level abilities with patient care skills including 12 lead EKG testing, EKG monitoring/problem solving, patientpositioning, patient transfers, vital signs, orthopedic splinting and point of care testing
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ED procedures and equipment
  • High level problem solving skills/customer service skills/priority setting
  • Ability to assist in the development of less experienced staff
  • High level communication skills with both patients and the medical care team
  • Medical terminology
  • Basic computer skills
  • No weight lifting restrictions

Licensure/Certification

  • Current Minnesota and/or National EMT certification
  • Current BLS certification

Work Schedule

0.0 FTE, Casual Position, Casual staff are required to work sixteen (16) hours per four-week schedule. Shifts should include one evening or one night shift and one weekend shift. Working an evening or night shift on a weekend satisfies both the weekend and off shift requirement.
Holiday agreement is one holiday per year based on seniority. If an employee, works at another hospital and is required to work a holiday this will be waived.
